As the winter chill settles into Brisbane's north side, our team at Aspley Family Medical Practice is gearing up for the seasonal respiratory surge. While most of us are accustomed to rolling up our sleeves for the annual flu shot and COVID-19 boosters, there is another major winter threat that older Australians need to look out for: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
Historically, protecting yourself against RSV came with a hefty out-of-pocket expense of up to $300. However, thanks to a recent expansion of the National Immunisation Program (NIP), the federal government is now funding FREE RSV vaccinations for Australians aged 75 and over.
If you or a loved one are eligible, here is everything you need to know about RSV, the vaccine, and how to book your free dose right here in Aspley.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a highly contagious virus that infects the lungs and breathing passages. For decades, it was widely discussed as a childhood illness affecting infants. However, medical data shows that RSV is just as dangerous for older adults.
In fact, Australia is currently seeing a significant winter surge in RSV cases. For seniors, the virus can quickly move past a mild cold and travel deep into the lower respiratory tract.
The Health Risks: In older adults, severe RSV can lead to acute viral pneumonia, severe breathing difficulties, and a permanent decline in physical and cognitive function. It also heavily strains the heart and lungs, potentially triggering heart attacks or strokes, and can dangerously destabilize existing chronic conditions like asthma, COPD, and diabetes.
The Australian Government has invested over $445 million to provide the Arexvy® RSV vaccine completely free of charge under the NIP to our most vulnerable populations.
You are eligible for a free RSV vaccine at our clinic if you hold a valid Medicare card and are:
All adults aged 75 years and over
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 60 years and over
A single dose of the RSV vaccine is still highly recommended if you are aged 60–74, especially if you live with underlying health issues like severe heart or lung conditions. While it is not federally funded for this age bracket yet, you can still access it via a private prescription. Speak to your Aspley GP to see if a private vaccine is right for you.
Yes! It is completely safe to co-administer your RSV vaccine alongside your annual influenza vaccine or your latest COVID-19 booster.
Our immune systems are incredibly resilient, and combining your vaccinations means fewer trips to the clinic and comprehensive protection before the winter peak hits its stride. If you prefer to space them out out of personal preference, our nursing team can easily map out a quick, multi-week schedule for you.
Protecting our local community in Aspley, Carseldine, Chermside, and surrounding suburbs is our highest priority. Because this free program has only recently launched, demand is high, and stock must be managed carefully.
We highly recommend booking an "Immunisation Appointment" rather than a standard consultation to ensure your free NIP vaccine dose is allocated and ready for you.
